Indications:
Surgery
Pre and Post operative conditions.
Inadequate feeding, disturbance of/or contraindication to
oral feeding
Operative procedures on Gastrointestinal tract,
Stenosis of gastrointestinal tract, Diffuse peritonitis
Draining and purulent wounds, Fistulae, Osteomyelitis,
Corrosive injuries in oesophagus or stomach, Burns, Accidental
trauma,
Fracture of long bones, Crush injury.
Internal Medicine
Malabsorption in G.I. disorders such as Pyloric stenosis,
Ulcerative enterocolitis, Ulcerative colitis, Regional enteritis,
Malignant diseases, Small bowel syndrome, Gastro-duodenal
ulcers.
Anorexia, Cancer related Cachexia, Persistent pyrexial states,
strokes, comatose conditions, after treatment of metabolic
disturbances, Renal failure with only marginally raised blood
nitrogen values & following dialysis.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 200 - 800 ml I.V./day
Children: 0.2- 0.25 gm of Nitrogen/kg body weight
Drip Rate: 15 - 20 Drops initially followed by 30-40 Drops
per minute
Recommended Energy Requirements:
Recommended simultaneous calorie supply is 150-200 cal./gm
of Nitrogen
Precaution:
Signs of intolerance and increased renal losses resulting
in AMINO ACID
disequilibrium are possbile if infusion rate is too high.
Contraindications:
Cardiac insufficiency, Irreversible liver damage.
