Mode of Action:
Dehydroemetine kills the amoeba by inhibiting protein synthesis.
Dehydroemetine inhibits polypeptide chain elongation, thereby
blocking protein synthesis in parasitic and mammalian cells.
Dehydroemetine in combination with metronidazole is very effective
in treating intestinal amoebiasis and liver abscess.
Indication:
Acute and Chronic amoebiasis, Hepatic amoebiasis, pulmonary
amoebiasis.
Dosage:
The dosage is 1mg per kg body weight daily for a period
of 6 to 10 days. If necessary, the dose may be prolonged upto
the 15th day. For combination therapy Metronidazole 400 -800
mg orally thrice daily.
